Awkward Conversations with My Son #2 - "Who's Jesus?"

Bless my almost 7 year old, tackling both sex and religion on the same day.  Of course I could have amalgamated this with yesterday's post, but hey, I have so little blog fodder these days that I thought I'd spin it out over two blogs.

Joseph:  Do you know when Santa's birthday is?  (quite why he is asking about Santa in June is beyond me)

Me:  No, do you?

Joseph:  Yes of course, it's on the 25th of December silly.

Me:  Well, no, actually the 25th of December is Jesus's birthday.

Joseph:  Who's Jesus?  (what do they teach these kids at school in a Catholic country?)

Me:  Jesus is the son of God, who was born at Christmas.  Christians worship Jesus and God in their churches.
Jesus Christ
Jesus - he shares the same birthday as Santa!

Joseph:  What are Christians?  (clearly he's not paying attention in his Religi√≥ Alternativa classes!)

Me:  Well there are lots of different religions, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs,  Hindus to name but a few.  Most of your friends are Christians, or Catholics to be precise, although there are some Muslims at your school.

Joseph:  Are we Catholic?

Me:  No, we choose not to worship any God or Jesus, which means we are atheists.  But it is important to respect other people's beliefs and religions.

Joseph:  But we still celebrate Santa's birthday, don't we?

Me:  *Sigh*  Yes son, we do.

Joseph:  But when is Santa's birthday then?

Me:  I don't know, let's pretend it's the 25th of December shall we?

Joseph:  Yes, can I play on the Playstation now?

Me:  *relief*  Of course you can.
